This interactive program teaches students the basic skills of anaesthetics and consists of 5 sections, each containing digital video: Introduction, Phases, Injection anaesthesia, Inhalation anaesthesia, Combined injection/inhalation anaesthesia. It succeeds in simulating the complex technique of anaes¬thetics, using the features of modern computers and a mathematical model which describes the concentration of an anaesthetic drug in the major compartments of the body (blood and target tissues). All parameters involved can be changed and the effects can be viewed and diagnosed using digital video. This allows many different situations and stages of the process to be studied, including effects of anaesthesia on reflexes (which can be tested after a variable period of time), mucous colour, muscle tonus and pupil size. The anaesthetic drug and its concentration (dosage) and factors like body weight, gender, and route of administration (inhalation or injection) can be set as well. Basic information on physiological parameters (heart rate, respiration and blood pressure) is also provided.
