GOLEM

This interactive multimedia software simulator has been designed as a clinical physiological trainer to help improve diagnostic and therapeutic decisions in real critical clinical disorders. It integrates blood circulation, respiration control, kidney function, body fluid volume and osmotic homeostasis, acid-base and electrolyte balance, and control of glycaemia, along with the regulatory influence of relevant hormones and the influence of some therapeutic procedures. By imitating the real biological original in various pathological states with sufficient fidelity, it allows substitution of real experiments performed on animals with computer simulated situations. Its theoretical basis relies upon the mathematical expression of the internal environment homeostasis, which includes 39 non-linear differential equations, with 89 input and 179 output variables.
