Viennese simulator for rectal examination of horses

Producer: Künzel, Prof. Wolfgang

This is a mannikin of a horse, polyester built in scale 1:1 for teaching and training rectal examination in veterinary students before living animals become involved. The mannikin is at that time in use at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna, Austria, at the Clinic of Equine Medicine of the University of Bern, Switzerland, and at the University of Glasgow Veterinary School in Scotland. The organs of the mannikin are partly artificial in two component plastics for authentic feeling, partly taken from slaughterhouses. Artificial organs are the kidneys, the spleen, the suspensory renosplenic ligament, the aorta, the urinary bladder, the ovaries, the uterus, the deferent ducts, their mesenteries, and the vaginal rings. The intestines are taken from slaughterhouses, fixed in a solution of Formalin and Tegodor and afterwards impregnated with polyethylenglycol. At both ends of the intestine fittings are mounted, so the intestine can be inflated up to the sensory wanted. The anus is built with a metal frame, stretching a perforated rubber fold replacing the sphincter muscle and attaching the artificial rectum.
