Abstract
Performance of endotracheal intubation in the pediatric emergency department is a specialized skill, requiring effort to both attain and maintain competence. Skills training can be approached through the “learn, see, practice, prove, do, maintain” framework. Technology-enhanced simulation should be used to assist this process, providing the opportunity for health care practitioners to practice and refine their skills while minimizing the risks to patient safety. Effective simulation-based training programs must incorporate evidence-based instructional design features. Technology-enhanced simulation shows promise for use in “proving” skills attainment as an assessment tool before performance on real patients. When used along with multicenter quality improvement collaborations and video review of skills, technology-enhanced simulation provides benefits to maintaining individual and systems competency in endotracheal intubation.
